Welcome to Year 2!

We hope you had a lovely summer break and are feeling refreshed and ready for the first Autumn term in Year 2! We have lots of exciting topics this term that you can find more information about below.

What are we learning?

Geography – The UK

During this term, our geography focus will be The UK. We will be learning all about the four countries of the UK – England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland and where to find them on a map. We will learn about the capital cities and flags of each country as well as different landmarks and traditions for each respective nation. Alongside this we will also focus on the city of London in more depth to recognise and name important landmarks.

Science – Everyday Materials

In science this term our topic will be Everyday Materials. Within this unit we will focus upon naming everyday materials and recognising their properties. We will conduct a range of investigations linked to materials and discuss why different materials are better for making different objects. Alongside this we will learn about natural and man-made materials and be able to sort materials into a range of different categories.

Other Subjects:

English – letters and narratives.

Maths – place value, addition and subtraction.

PE ball games and swimming.

What are we reading?

This half term we are going to be focusing upon the author Anthony Browne within our English letters. First, we will be reading the book ‘Voices in the Park’ where we will meet 4 different characters and see the world from their points of view. We will use this book to inspire our letter writing. Then we will be reading the book ‘Gorilla’ a story of Hannah and her love for gorillas. We will use this book as inspiration for our narrative writing within our English lessons. Alongside this we will be choosing a variety of different stories to read for pleasure and at home time within class and looking at the work of our author of the month.
